Savage angrily cut in, threw his hands up at the old Chief and with furious gestures shouted:

If you and your people have all you need, why then do you steal our horses and mules? Why do you rob the miners’ camps? Why do you murder white men, plunder and burn their houses?

Tenaya was silent for a while, before answering carefully:

My young braves have sometimes taken horses and mules from palefaces. Maybe it was wrong. They may have been foolish, but it is not wrong to take from enemies who have harmed my people. My young braves believe the white diggers of yellow metal are our enemies. Now you have explained, we know that this may not be true. If what you say is true, we will be glad to live in peace. We will stay in our villages and be friends. My people do not want to go to the plains. Some tribes who go there are very bad enemies. They will make war upon my people.

We cannot live on the plains with them. In the mountains, we can defend ourselves against them.
